Why learn programming before engineering college?

The key idea

Programming gives you a way to express repeated calculations and inspect how a result was produced. For an engineering student, useful preparation includes naming units, checking assumptions and testing cases that should be easy to verify by hand.

Your engineering discipline and university determine which tools and languages you will use. C and C++ can provide a programming foundation, but they do not replace the mathematics, physics or specialist software in your degree.

Start with a calculation you can explain

Consider a classroom exercise: distance equals speed multiplied by time, assuming constant speed. If speed is 4 metres per second and time is 6 seconds, distance is 24 metres.

Write the units beside the values. A time input of 2 minutes must become 120 seconds before using the same formula with metres per second. Omitting that conversion gives a plausible-looking number with the wrong meaning.

SpeedTimeExpected result
4 m/s6 s24 m
4 m/s0 s0 m
4 m/s2 min480 m after conversion

This is a learning calculation, not a control system or an engineering design recommendation.

Define the allowed inputs

Decide whether your exercise accepts negative time. If it represents elapsed duration, you may reject it as outside the stated model. State what speed means: magnitude or a signed velocity component. The correct validation depends on the problem definition.

A program that silently changes an invalid value can hide a misunderstanding. In a study exercise, identify the invalid case and explain the rule instead of pretending the input was valid.

Separate the calculation from its presentation

Think of three steps: validate and convert the inputs, perform the calculation, then present the result with its unit. Keeping these steps separate makes it easier to locate an error.

If the arithmetic is correct but the displayed unit is wrong, rewriting the formula will not solve the problem. If minutes were treated as seconds, the conversion step needs attention. This distinction is valuable when you later divide work into functions.

Compare with an independent check

Use a hand calculation for a small case, then change one input at a time. Doubling time at constant speed should double distance in this model. This relationship is a useful check even before you calculate the exact new answer.

As exercises become more complex, discuss rounding, precision and the limitations of the model with your course materials. A successful program run alone does not validate the underlying physics.

Choose a learning next step

Gammal Tech's C course is the entry to its C++ route. Use the functions guide when you are ready to organise calculations into reusable units. Before engineering college, aim to explain your assumptions and test your work; preparation supports learning, while grades still depend on your actual university assessments.
