What does effective exam preparation involve?
The key idea
Practise the type of work your assessment requires. Reading code, writing code, explaining a design and analysing complexity are related but different tasks. Rewatching lessons alone may leave you unprepared for one or more of them.
Start with your syllabus, marking guidance and authorised practice material. Use your institution's rules for collaboration and AI tools. Keep any independent assessment genuinely your own work.
Use four modes of practice
| Mode | What you do | What you check |
|---|---|---|
| Trace | Follow a program by hand | Variable values and execution order |
| Write | Solve a task from a blank file | Correct syntax and a complete approach |
| Test | Choose normal and edge cases | Whether the claimed rule holds |
| Explain | Describe why the solution works | Assumptions, limits and complexity where relevant |
Rotate these modes rather than assuming that success in one proves mastery of all four. Someone who can recognise an answer may still struggle to produce it independently.
Build a trace table
For a loop that adds 2, 4 and 6, record the total after each addition: 2, 6 and 12. Add a column for the current index and note exactly when the stopping condition is checked.
Then change the loop boundary. Does it skip the final value or try to read beyond the array? Write the predicted behaviour before running the corrected version. The exercise connects the syntax with the state changes it controls.
Make mistakes useful
Keep a small review sheet with four columns: task, mistake, cause and next practice. “Wrong answer” is too vague. “Used a less-than-or-equal boundary with a zero-based array of length three” identifies something you can practise.
Sort errors by cause. A forgotten semicolon needs a different response from misunderstanding recursion or choosing an unsuitable data structure. Spend more revision time on errors that reveal a missing concept.
Rehearse the assessment conditions
If the exam is handwritten, practise writing and tracing without relying on editor suggestions. If it is on a computer, practise in the permitted environment. Use a time limit similar to a short assessment section, then review your work without the clock.
Do not memorise one complete answer and assume the question will repeat. Change a requirement: count instead of sum, search instead of sort, or handle an empty collection. Explain which parts of your approach must change.
Track progress honestly
Compare new attempts with earlier ones using the same criteria: correct result, valid boundaries, clear explanation and completion within the available time. Improvement in those tasks is useful evidence of learning, but it is not a promise of a particular grade.
If you are taking Gammal Tech courses before university, use this routine to practise the concepts independently. When university begins, adapt it to the actual module and assessment requirements rather than expecting the course sequence to match every exam.
