The key idea

You can send a food photo to Gammal Tech on WhatsApp at +201033998844 and ask the AI to estimate its calories. Use the reply as a rough guide to the meal, not an exact measurement. Portion size, ingredients and preparation can change the answer substantially.

Can AI estimate calories from a picture of food?

Yes. Gammal Tech's WhatsApp AI can look at a meal photo and give you a calorie estimate. You do not need to install a separate calorie-counting app to ask the question. Open the conversation, attach your picture and explain what you want to know.

The useful result is an estimate you can question and improve. The AI may recognise rice and chicken, for example, but the photo alone cannot establish the exact weight or every ingredient. A clear-looking number is still an estimate.

This is most useful for everyday food awareness: understanding a meal's likely components, noticing missing information, and learning which portion details matter. It should not be used to calculate medication doses or replace a prescribed nutrition plan.

How to ask for a calorie estimate on WhatsApp

  1. Open the Gammal Tech conversation. Use +201033998844 with your active WhatsApp AI access.
  2. Take a clear picture of the food. Show the whole serving, with the main items visible. Say whether it is your portion or a shared plate.
  3. Add information the camera cannot show. Include any known weight, ingredients, cooking method, oil, sauce or drink that belongs with the meal.
  4. Ask for a range and assumptions. Request a short breakdown, plus the missing detail most likely to change the answer.
  5. Check what the AI identified. Correct an ingredient or portion assumption before using the estimate.

Copy this with your photo: “Estimate the calories in my portion of this meal as a range. List the foods you can identify and the portion sizes you are assuming. I know these details: [ingredients, amounts and cooking method]. Tell me what is uncertain and ask one useful follow-up question.”

If the image cannot be read, follow the service's attachment instructions or describe a small meal in text. Repeatedly sending the same rejected image is unlikely to help. See the WhatsApp file and reply limitations guide.

What should you include with the picture?

A useful caption separates what you know from what you want the AI to infer. These examples are prompts to adapt, not calorie calculations for the pictured foods.

Helpful details for different meals
MealUseful detail to sendQuestion to ask
Homemade rice and chickenKnown serving weights and whether oil was addedWhich parts of the estimate still depend on a guess?
Koshari from a restaurantThe portion you ate, toppings and any extra sauceWhat information would narrow the estimate?
A sandwichBread, filling and sauces that may be hiddenHave you included the filling I described?
A packaged snackThe nutrition label and amount eatenCalculate the calories for my amount using this label.

If you do not know the oil quantity or serving weight, say so. Asking the AI to label its assumptions is more helpful than asking it to sound certain. A range also needs checking; presenting two numbers does not make an estimate accurate.

How to check the answer before logging it

Read the food list first, then the quantities. If the AI describes a sauce you did not use, misses an item or treats a shared plate as one serving, correct that before looking at the total.

Keep measured information and visual guesses separate in your notes. For packaged food, check whether the label gives calories per serving or per another stated amount. The FDA's label guide explains why the amount eaten must match the amount used in the calculation.

Illustrative calculation: If a label states 120 calories per 30 g and you eat 45 g, the calculation is 120 × 45 ÷ 30 = 180 calories. These are invented label values for the example, not a recommendation or a photo-based estimate.

If you know the measured portion and have reliable nutrition information, give those to the AI rather than asking it to guess from appearance. Keep the original label or recipe available so you can check the arithmetic.

How accurate is a food-photo calorie estimate?

There is no single accuracy percentage that applies to every meal or AI service. A published evaluation of meal-photo analysis found that identifying food was easier than estimating all of its nutritional content reliably, with particular difficulty around larger portions. It did not evaluate Gammal Tech's service.

A picture can leave important information uncertain: depth, hidden ingredients, preparation and how much you actually ate. Adding facts can make the request better informed, but it does not turn the reply into a laboratory measurement.

Use an estimate for a low-stakes question such as “What might I be overlooking in this meal?” If your health care depends on precise intake, use the method agreed with your clinician or dietitian instead of relying on a photo estimate.

Turn one meal question into a useful next step

You do not need to photograph everything or turn each meal into a long conversation. Choose a question that helps you understand your usual food, such as a portion you find difficult to judge or a recipe you prepare often.

A focused follow-up: “The rice was weighed after cooking, and the sauce was served separately. Update the estimate using those details. Keep the answer short and distinguish the known amounts from your remaining assumptions.”

Record the corrected estimate as an estimate, with the relevant portion details. For a wider routine, the fitness-goal check-in guide shows how to bring a short summary of your habits to the conversation. It focuses on practical actions rather than treating a calorie number as the only measure of progress.

What access do you need?

Gammal Tech's general WhatsApp AI subscription is 200 EGP per month for moderate personal use. It provides AI replies inside WhatsApp, rather than a paid upgrade in the official ChatGPT or Gemini apps. Image support and reply length remain subject to the service's limits.

The abuse policy is enforced: heavy, automated, bulk or abusive use can lead to suspension before the paid month ends. A few focused questions are the intended kind of interaction; this is not a bulk food-image analysis API.

Use the account and Wallet setup guide if you are new. Account activation takes 1–10 days once; already activated members do not repeat that initial wait.

Start with one useful question

Use Gammal Tech’s WhatsApp AI for 200 EGP per month with an activated account. New accounts take 1–10 days to activate once. Add 200 EGP to your Wallet or use a sufficient existing balance, then message +201033998844 and follow the service instructions. Funding the Wallet alone does not activate the subscription.
