What distinguishes software development from writing a program?

The key idea

When comparing software development courses in Dubai, look for the work that surrounds the code. Programming turns a method into instructions a computer can execute. Software development also involves understanding a request, agreeing on behaviour, checking results, reviewing changes and explaining what has been delivered. A course title alone does not establish how much of that process you will practise.

Examine this distinction with a small exercise using fictional data. Ask whether the teaching connects a request to an observable result, then shows what happens when that request changes.

Start with a request that can be checked

Imagine a fictional study-session recorder. Its first requirement is to total three completed sessions lasting 25, 35 and 20 minutes. The expected total is 80 minutes. Agree that a duration cannot be negative. The exercise initially uses a small set of invented records; accounts, online synchronisation and production storage are outside its scope.

Now the requester adds a rule: cancelled sessions must remain visible in the records but must not contribute to the total. Marking the 20-minute session as cancelled should change the total to 60. Deleting that record would produce the same total but fail the requirement to keep it visible.

That difference is the point of the exercise. Correct arithmetic is only one part of correct behaviour. A useful course makes the learner explain which information the program must retain and which operation the new rule changes.

Follow the change through four decisions

DecisionA concrete answer for this exerciseEvidence to inspect
Clarify the ruleOnly completed sessions countA written rule with an example
Represent the informationEach record needs duration and statusA small diagram or record description
Change the calculationSkip cancelled sessions when totallingA focused change and an explanation
Check the resultCancelled records remain visibleExpected and actual outputs

Also ask what a newly created record means. Is its initial status completed, pending or explicitly supplied? Do not silently choose one when the request leaves it open. For this practice task, agree that every record must explicitly say completed or cancelled. Other statuses are outside the brief until their behaviour is defined.

The learner should be able to distinguish an unanswered question from a programming error. Guessing a requirement and then implementing it perfectly still leaves the original uncertainty unresolved.

Use acceptance checks and regression checks together

An acceptance check asks whether the changed behaviour meets the request. A regression check asks whether behaviour that should remain available still works. In this exercise, checking the unchanged all-completed case protects the original total while the cancellation case checks the new rule.

  1. All three sessions are completed: total 80 minutes.
  2. The 20-minute session is cancelled: total 60, with three records still visible.
  3. All sessions are cancelled: total zero, with the records retained.
  4. A negative duration is proposed: reject it under the agreed rule instead of silently subtracting time.
  5. A session label changes: the total remains unchanged.

These are learning cases, not a complete specification for a production product. For example, a real service would need additional decisions about access, editing and persistence. Naming those limits is part of understanding the exercise.

Inspect how the learner explains the change

Ask for a short before-and-after explanation: the old rule, the new rule, the affected part and the checks performed. Version history can help make changes reviewable. The useful habit is to make a focused change and explain its purpose; a large number of saved versions does not prove good judgment.

A reviewer should be able to ask why cancelled sessions are retained and receive a requirement-based answer. If a learner can only say that the instructor used a particular technique, the example has not yet become independent understanding. Try a further question: what would need clarification before adding a pending status?

Compare course scope with the skill you want next

When reviewing an offer available to learners in Dubai, request a sample assignment and its completion conditions. Ask whether you will clarify requirements, review another solution, make a change and explain the checks yourself. Record which activities are demonstrated by the instructor and which you will perform independently.

Gammal Tech's C, C++, Data Structures, Algorithms and OOP courses address parts of the programming foundation. Do not infer that a course includes team review, deployment or a complete software project unless its stated content confirms that. Choose the next learning step around the capability you want to demonstrate: write the calculation, model its state or manage a change reliably.
