Should you learn programming in Arabic or English?

The key idea

Use the language that helps you understand an explanation, while learning the technical vocabulary needed to read code and its references. Understanding a loop and recognising the word loop are connected skills, but they are not the same task. You can develop them together without postponing all programming until your general English feels perfect.

This guide is for learners studying from Al Madinah, Muscat, Doha, Kuwait City and elsewhere in the Gulf. It addresses a shared learning question rather than describing a local classroom. The method works with an Arabic explanation, an English reference, or a mixture chosen deliberately. Confirm a course's actual teaching and support languages before enrolling.

Separate three language decisions

The explanation language is what an instructor uses to explain an idea. The programming language defines the syntax and meaning of the program. The reference language is what you encounter in manuals, compiler messages and library documentation. An Arabic explanation of C still needs to preserve C keywords and punctuation accurately.

DecisionWhat to checkSmall trial
Explanation languageCan you explain the idea after the lesson?Describe why a loop stops in your preferred language
Code and toolsCan you recognise the exact names and symbols?Locate a variable and its updates in a short example
Reading referencesCan you identify the relevant rule?Find the meaning of one unfamiliar term

Treat these as separate observations. A learner may explain a concept clearly in Arabic while needing help locating it in an English manual. Another may understand everyday English but still need to learn what return means in a function. Neither observation alone measures programming ability.

Build a glossary around actions

Create a short glossary from the lesson you are currently using. Record the original term, a useful Arabic explanation, and one action you can perform with it. A translation without an example can leave the meaning unclear.

TermUseful Arabic meaning hereEvidence of understanding
variableمتغير يحمل قيمة في البرنامجIdentify where the value changes
conditionشرط يحدد أي مسار ينفذGive an input that makes it false
parameterمعامل تستقبله الدالةIdentify which value the caller supplies
return valueقيمة تعيدها الدالةShow how the caller uses the result

Use the terminology preferred by your course or university, and record alternative Arabic names when they occur. Do not change a code identifier merely because a translation sounds more natural. Matching the original name helps you connect the explanation to the correct line.

Practise reading one instruction precisely

Take this exercise statement: “Return the first name that starts with M.” Identify the selection rule, starts with M, and the limit, the first matching name. For the fictional ordered names Lina, Maha and Mona, the required result is Maha.

Now translate the meaning into Arabic: «أعد أول اسم يبدأ بالحرف M». If a translation changes first to all, the answer becomes both Maha and Mona. If it omits the condition, a learner might return Lina. The example is deliberately small so that the reading difference becomes visible.

Write an example that distinguishes two possible interpretations before looking for a full solution. This habit is useful when reading assignments in either language. Keep the original statement beside your interpretation until you have checked that the required output is unchanged.

Ask for help with enough context

Prepare a short message containing the original instruction, your interpretation, the small example you used, and the specific word or step you cannot resolve. Ask the reviewer to correct the interpretation before supplying a complete program.

For example: “I understand first to mean the first matching name, not the first item in the list. With Lina, Maha and Mona, I expect Maha only. Is that the intended result?” This question is easier to answer than “I do not understand the English,” and it makes your current reasoning visible.

If you use a translation tool or an AI assistant, check its output against the original symbols and your example. Review code blocks separately from surrounding prose. Avoid sharing private account details, classmates' submissions or confidential workplace material in a request for help.

Choose a manageable next lesson

Try one short lesson using your preferred explanation language. Afterwards, explain the idea aloud, locate two terms in a reference, and solve a changed example. Record whether the obstacle was the concept, the terminology or the task wording. Choose your next practice from that evidence.

For Gammal Tech courses, ask which languages are used for explanations, exercises and support. Keep course prerequisites separate from language preference: studying a familiar subject in English does not replace the required programming foundation. Use the course roadmap for subject order and keep this glossary as a companion to your actual exercises.
